Bharti gets nod for additional spectrum

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Jan. 30 Bharti Airtel is set to receive additional spectrum in at least 10 circles despite the Government toughening the subscriber linked allocation criteria.

The company has got formal approval from the Department of Telecom for immediate allocation in five circles while subscriber base in another five circles has reached the prescribed levels. The five circles where Bharti will get additional spectrum immediately are West Bengal, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (West), Assam and Haryana.

“We are in position to get additional spectrum in 10 circles of which we have got formal communication from DoT for five. We have got some relief because DoT decided to accept the TRAI norms instead of those suggested by the Telecom Engineering Centre,” said Mr Akhil Gupta, Joint Managing Director, Bharti Group.

Mr Gupta said the company would be investing in ramping up the network to cope up with the higher subscriber based allocation norms. “The crunch in spectrum has not really had any significant impact on our growth because we are doing the needful in terms of indoor connectivity and network up gradation to meet the growing user base.”

Mr Gupta said that competition from new operators will have no pressure on the company’s growth as it was accounted for in the business. On new opportunities, Mr Gupta said Bharti will be rolling out Direct-to-Home and Internet Protocol TV in the first quarter of the next fiscal year starting April.
