Health States - Karnataka WALK campaign on arthritis Our Bureau Bangalore, Jan. 30 ‘WALK’ is the name of a new initiative to take on arthritis and osteoporosis. The Arthritis Foundation of India (AFI) said the awareness campaign to prevent and manage the twin joint problems would start with an open interactive meeting between specialists and patients in Bangalore on February 3. The AFI Chairman, Dr Sushil Sharma, told a news conference, “The objective is to spread knowledge about arthritis and its treatment options, both surgical and non-surgical” to people with arthritis and their families. It would enable them to take an informed decision and manage the disease and improve the quality of their lives. An extensive publicity campaign is planned starting with Bangalore and will include kiosks in parks, malls, residential colonies and clubs. Over the coming year, the foundation plans to spread the campaign to more cities. An AFI survey found barely 10 per cent of the people had any awareness of arthritis. Of the more than 100 types of arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and trauma-related arthritis are the most common causes of joint damage. Osteoarthritis accounted for half of all chronic conditions in persons aged over 65; rheumatoid arthritis 6 per cent and around 25 per cent of the 60-plus age group has reported significant pain and disability from osteoarthritis. The “WALK” initiative in Bangalore will be spearheaded by three prominent orthopaedic surgeons – Dr Prasanna Kumar, Dr Sanjay Pai and Dr Sharan Patil. The not-for-profit AFI was formed by a group of doctors and volunteers to put joint problems on the national health agenda. It is a WHO partner in the latter’s Bone & Joint Decade.
