Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Widespread snow, rain as cold wave lifts Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 3 A prevailing western disturbance that crossed the northwest border with an unprecedented north-northwest to south-southeast orientation early on Saturday morning has set off snowy and wet weather respectively in the hills and the plains. The unique alignment will enable it dictate weather to parts of west-central and central India and the plains of east India. Moderate strong, the system has since thrown up a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan, which is expected to help further rev up the proceedings. MERCURY RISESScattered to fairly widespread precipitation has occurred over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said on Sunday. Night temperatures have risen by 3-5°C over northwest India, adjoining central India and Maharashtra leading to abatement of cold wave conditions. Light to moderate snowfall has been forecast at many places over western Himalayan region during the next 3-4 days. Isolated to scattered rain or thundershowers are likely over the northern plains. The rise in mercury will propagate to further east over east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal in line with the movement of the disturbance. Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, parts of east India and the northeast. The fairly widespread snowfall over the western Himalayan region will persist for another 4-5 days. SOUTH VULNERABLE A cyclonic circulation persisting over south Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala may bring rain to coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu. The expected ‘shutting out’ of strong weather-making systems in the northwest of the country would make the southern peninsula vulnerable for moisture flux from easterly waves or troughs in the Bay of Bengal and some resultant wet session. Models show the moisture incursion to take place across the extreme southeast coast (Tamil Nadu) and Kerala, and later spread to north along the southeast coast till coastal Orissa. The Ensemble Forecast Model of the US Navy showed ‘graphical equaliser’ moisture spikes thrown up thanks to corresponding thrust from the south and southeast from mid-week this week. DELHI CLIMES Meanwhile, contrary to forecasts, New Delhi was not exactly freezing cold on Friday night leading up to the arrival of the western disturbance, but unconfirmed reports say the mercury fell to well within the nearest degree mark elsewhere in the National Capital. The Met observatory at Pusa recorded a night time low of 1 deg C; the main Safdarjung observatory recorded 4.1 deg C in the dead of the night before touching a further low of 3 deg C early on Saturday morning, according to sources in the Met department.
