Tea prices gain on firm demand at Kochi

Kochi, Feb. 5 All round demand firmed up the price of good liquoring, medium and plainer CTC dust teas by Re 1-Rs 2 at the Kochi Tea auction last week. High priced CTCs were barely steady to irregularly easier. Orthodox mediums were dearer while high grown orthodox remained steady. Blenders operated on good liquoring varieties while the domestic market remained fully active. There was good demand from exporters for medium CTC varieties.

Best CTC varieties fetched Rs 62-74, medium CTC quoted Rs 54-62 and below medium was at Rs 45-50. High grown BOPD (Broken Orange Pekoe Dust) was at Rs 100-118, while medium BOPD ranged at Rs 45-48 and secondaries quoted Rs 41-43.

Leaf Sale

There was 2,95,000 kg of leaf tea on offer, which evoked good general demand. Best quality high grown varieties quoted higher, other high grown varieties were steady to irregular. Medium primary broken and whole leaf grades were steady to firm. Plain orthodox and secondaries were also steady. Both the medium and high priced CTC leaf were steady to easier. High grown orthodox witnessed good demand from exporters. They were selective on mediums and secondaries.

The best Nilgiri varieties fetched Rs 95-122, medium orthodox was at Rs 55-76 and plain orthodox was at Rs 42-48. The best CTC leaf quoted Rs 56-61 and medium CTC leaf fetched Rs 51-55.
