National oil palm board mooted

Our Bureau

Vijayawada, Feb. 5 There is need for setting up a national oil palm board as there is no apex body to coordinate the activities related to the cultivation and marketing of the crop, and in view of its growing importance for the edible oil security of the nation, according to Dr K.L Chadha, former Deputy Director-General (Horti- culture).

He was presiding over an interactive session here on Monday at the conclusion of a three-day national seminar on oil palm organised by the Society for Promotion of Oil Palm Research and Development (SOPOPRAD).

Dr Chadha promoted the crop in Andhra Pradesh, along with Dr P. Rethinam, President, SOPOPRAD.

He said it was universally agreed that no other oilseed would match oil palm in oil recovery. There was an urgent need, therefore, to promote the crop in Andhra Pradesh and other parts of the country suitable for it.

Mr P. Subba Rao, President of the Andhra Pradesh Oil Palm Farmers’ Association, demanded that the national oil palm board be situated in Andhra Pradesh, as the State was number one in cultivating the crop.

Representatives from several States such as Mizoram, Orissa and Goa demanded that subsidy on drip irrigation be increased as micro irrigation is critical to crops.
