New Delhi, Feb 8 State-run telephony services provider Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd on Friday said it will float a tender for 10 lakh new broadband connections over the next few moths.

“MTNL has already applied for five lakh new broadband connections. Once this phase of expansion is over, we would float a tender for creating additional 10 lakh connections,” MTNL Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Mr R. S. P. Sinha, told reporters here.

M-com service

MTNL also introduced a new M-commerce service for its landline and GSM subscribers under which users would be able to pay their bills through SMS. “We believe that this would be the right step forward in ensuring the fastest, most convenient and hassle-free way to make bill payments for all our customers,” Mr Sinha said. MTNL has tied up with mobile transactions services provider Suvidha to enable its M-commerce service.

Mr Anand Shrivastav, CMD, Suvidha (the company provides mobile transactions/micro-payments services and owns the technology platform) added, “We are happy to have partnered MTNL and are confident that mobile payment mode will evolve into a preferred one in the years to come. ”

Mr Sinha said the company would upgrade its system for providing 3G services as and when spectrum is allocated and has already conducted internal test for the service
