Software Symantec focuses on green data centres V. Rishi Kumar Hyderabad, Feb. 8 Data centres in India and the Asia-Pacific region are leading the way in green technologies by deploying software to address this major corporate agenda, according to technology solutions company Symantec Corporation. Green data centre, which was synonymous with hardware and power savings, is now being addressed by software related issues, which is yielding similar results. The Chief Technology Officer of Symantec India, Mr Basant Rajan, said in a survey of data centres, it has come through that chief information officers are actively engaged in addressing this as a major business imperative. Since a majority of data centres in the Asia-Pacific and Japan are either relatively new, or are being upgraded, they are amongst the first to adopt software-led technologies that bring about virtualisation and thereby also saves on cost of management, he said. Mr Rajan told Business Line that most of the companies in the region are also taking to new technologies based on compliance related issues that mandates them to store and retrieve information for overseas regulatory needs. Giving the analogy of making an old car Euro III compliant, Mr Rajan said that it is much costlier task. Likewise, to make the data centre to comply with green data centre norms driven by hardware is an expensive issue which enterprises are vary of. Key issues of a green data centre, that is, reducing power consumption, increasing efficiency and to cut down toxic waste are addressed through software, he explained. There are no established benchmarks when it comes to green data centres. In the case of disaster recovery sites, often data centres had one back-up server for every server. This is not necessary when software is used to virtualise, that is extract information from any machine, he said. Symantec is actively engaged with Indian enterprises as a partner and also as a consultancy provider in green data centres, he said. More Stories on : Software | Environment
