‘Indian demand drives Asia-Pacific BPO market’

Bangalore, Feb. 11

TPI, a sourcing advisory firm, said according to its latest index, the outsourcing market in Asia Pacific grew substantially in 2007, helped by increased demand from corporations based in India.

Mr Siddharth Pai, Partner and Managing Director, India, said India is the largest outsourcing market in Asia-Pacific. In 2007, India almost doubled the value of its outsourcing work year-on-year. He said India as a market for outsourcing services is larger than Australia and Japan.

The average value of outsourcing contracts in Asia-Pacific increased 25 per cent to $176 million from $141 million, largely due to increased mega relationship activity. Nine mega relationships were signed in 2007, at a total value of $1.5 billion, TPI said.

This represents one-third of the mega relationships globally. The region’s overall share of the global outsourcing market is one-sixth, TPI said.

But the fourth quarter of calendar year 2007 saw only 108 contracts, the lowest quarterly value since the third quarter of 2005, TPI said. The total contract value for 2007 was the lowest in five years, it added.

The company also said that Europe, West Asia and Africa accounted for more than half of all global total contract value in the broader market for the first time ever. This was also the first time when the region surpassed the Americas in total contract value and the number of contracts signed.

TPI said the greatest activity was in the financial services, telecommunications and manufacturing sectors. Business services and energy were the fastest growing, it added.

The company also said the fourth quarter of calendar year 2007 was the best quarter for BPO total contract value in two years and the best in annual contract value in more than three years, helped by several large contract awards.
