Plea to step up relief to AP farmers

Hyderabad, Feb. 13 Ms D. Purandeswari, Union Minister of State for Human Resources, has appealed to Mr Sharad Pawar, Union Minister for Agriculture, to come to the rescue of the farmers in Andhra Pradesh who lost their crops in the recent rains due to cyclone.

The rains damaged crops in over one lakh hectares in Prakasam, Guntur and Nellore districts.

In a letter handed over to Mr Pawar in New Delhi on Wednesday, Ms Purandeswari asked him to consider a sanction of at least 25 per cent of the input cost as a relief to the farmers. Farmers in Prakasam districts were the worst hit, she said in the letter.

Giving the break-up of crop loss, she said farmers growing Bengal gram and paddy lost crop in over 53,000 hectares and 24,000 hectares respectively.
