Labour Reforms Government - Policy States - Other States Sikkim to increase daily wage of labour force Sarikah Atreya Gangtok, Feb. 17 The Sikkim Government has decided to increase the minimum daily wage of the State’s labour force from the existing Rs 85 to Rs 100 from April. This was stated by Mr B.M. Ramudamu, MLA and Vice-President of the labour wing of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front, here on Saturday. The Chief Minister, Mr Pawan Chamling, is expected to unveil the new scheme and other welfare measures for labourers at the beginning of the new financial year. Mr Ramudamu said the increase would make labourers in Sikkim one of the highest paid in the country. Although the announcement for the increase in daily wages had been made last year, it had not been implemented as yet. “The workforce here enjoys full protection and benefits and there is absolutely no labour problem in the State,” Mr Ramudamu said. An official of the State Labour Department said the Government had segregated the labour force into unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled categories. The daily wage may vary from Rs 100 to Rs 150, depending upon the labourers’ skill, he said. The department is conducting registration of labourers in the State for the purpose.
