Non-Performing Assets Net NPA of public sector banks declines as of Dec
K.R. Srivats New Delhi, Feb. 19 Net non-performing assets (NPA) of the public sector banks have declined in absolute terms to Rs 16,433 crore as on end-December 2007 from a level of Rs 16,663 crore as on end-September 2007. The net NPA level of Rs 16,433 crore as on end-December 2007, including that of State Bank of India (SBI) group, was, however, higher than the net NPA level of Rs 15,144 crore as on end-March 2007 and Rs 14,564 crore as on end-March 2006. Official sources said that 15 banks have reported less than 1 per cent net NPA, as a share of net advances, for the quarter ended December 31, 2007 while 12 banks have reported less than 2 per cent NPA position and only one bank has reported more than 2 per cent net NPA. Credit trendSome bankers pointed out that the strong credit growth in recent years continued to be underpinned by improvement in asset quality. Both credit delivery and credit quality had come in for discussion at a recent meeting of the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, with the chief executives of public sector banks.
