Economy ‘Growth process has to be both inclusive and sustainable’ Our Bureau Kolkata, Feb. 19 Pointing out that India’s economic growth process has to be both inclusive, and also sustainable, Mr Anand Sharma, Union minister of State for External Affairs, said here today that “India has actually not arrived, but re-emerged on the global arena today, having already emerged alongwith Brazil, as a trillion dollar economy”. Addressing captains of industry at an interactive session organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce here, Mr Sharma said globalisation has brought in its wake both opportunities, and challenges which need to be faced squarely. Seeking a judicious mix of policies to tackle critical issues like energy and food security, he said the latter was a global phenomenon contributing to soaring of food prices in many countries. He minister also said India’s economic engagement with East Asia has grown phenomenally in recent times, and was expected to touch $ 50 billion by 2011. On the energy front, he cautioned that “we need to look at all options, especially the renewables like solar, tidal energy and of course biofuels, given a future scenario of sharply rising energy demand.” Clean coal techHe also stressed on clean coal technologies, suggesting that we need to work towards a clean development mechanism in tune with the rest of the world. On border issues, he felt things need to move forward, especially after the Prime Minister’s visit and the discussions held on various issues. Describing the exercise as a “complex process”, he said “we have agreed on the guiding principles, and there is a need to guide the special representatives”. The engagement with Pakistan is now growing, he added. More Stories on : Economy
