Rice States - Tamil Nadu TNAU to research impact of global warming on rice The project will be operated under TNAU’s agro-climate research centre and will get the necessary technical support from Monterrey Tech, (Mexico). G. Gurumurthy Coimbatore, Feb. 22 The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has joined hands with the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research (Bioforsk) and the International Pacific Research Centre (IPRC), University of Hawaii (US) to initiate a collaborative research on mitigating the negative impacts of global warming on Indian agriculture, especially on rice productivity. Monsoon behaviourAccording to a TNAU communication, the proposed research project — focusing on the impact of climate change on rice areas and productivity — will assess the monsoon behaviour in the country’s different climatic zones and its impact on water availability and rice production in different meteorological sub-divisions. The project would identify and implement adaptation strategies to sustain rice production under changing climatic conditions. It would also create awareness, among stakeholders, on climate changes and enable capacity-building for integrating climate change considerations into the national agricultural development policies. Project supportThe project would be financially supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway. Bioforsk is a national R&D institute of the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food having expertise on rural development, environmental protection and natural research management. IPRC is a climate research centre conceived under the US-Japan common agenda for cooperation in the global perspective. More Stories on : Rice | Environment | Tamil Nadu | Climate & Weather
