SSI States - Tamil Nadu Shortage of wax hurts match units Our Correspondent Madurai, Feb. 22 The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has appealed for import of wax to tide over the current crisis in the fall of supply to match units in the short term and raise the refining capacity in the long term. In an appeal to the Union Petroleum Minister, Mr Murali Deora, the Chamber Secretary, Mr P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, pointed out that due to closure of match manufacturing units in China, the export demand has risen, increasing the consumption wax of many small match manufacturing units, especially in the south Tamil Nadu. Though Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) is supplying wax in a effective and fair manner, it is insufficient to meet the increased export demand. The situation gets affected during the shut down of the unit for maintenance as no sufficient stock of wax is maintained, leading to delay in despatches and giving rise to shortage. Stocking waxAt the time of shut down, the company should keep stock of wax for at least three months. To avoid short supply and help the match units, CPCL may be allowed to import all grades of wax and supply. To make the move viable the Centre should either fully remove or reduce substantially the import duty and the State should also reduce the local tax.
