‘India too has technology to intercept, destroy rogue satellites’

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Feb. 22 As a US Navy missile destroyed a crippled spy satellite on Wednesday, a vague, mute question might have immediately struck several Indians. What will happen if we were to face such a challenge? Can we carry out a similar mission to defend our territory in the prospect of threat perceptions?

Yes, says former President and father of India’s missile programme, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who asserted that the country possessed technological capabilities to identify and destroy the target.

Mr Kalam was talking to reporters on the sidelines of the two-day International Conference on Avionics Systems (ICAS-2008) here. The conference was organised by the Research Centre Imarat to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

“We have the ability to intercept and destroy any spatial object or debris in a radius of 200 km. We will definitely do that if it endangers Indian territory,” he said.

Dr V.K. Saraswat, Chief Controller R&D (MSS), a well-known name in the India’s missile programme, agreed. “We have the technological capabilities. It is just a matter of time before we could place the necessary wherewithal to meet such requirements,” he said. “We can predict and can always tackle such challenges,” he said.
