2-day bank strike from today

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Feb 24

More than a million bank employees and officers are to strike work on Monday and Tuesday, following the failure of talks between bank unions and Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) here on Saturday night.

Bank employees have also decided to go on an indefinite strike from March 24, the convenor of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), Mr C.H. Venkatachalam, told Business Line.

Talks fail

He said that talks with the IBA failed here as the latter could not commit itself to extending an option of pension to about three lakh bank employees who had in the mid-90s opted for provident fund, as against pension, as the second retirement benefit.

The bank employees had earlier observed a day-long strike, on January 25, to press for their demands.

Besides the nine-lakh bank employees and officers forming part of the UFBU, two lakh employees and officers of the State Bank of India group are also to participate in the strike. On Friday, bank unions had extensive discussions on their demands with the Chief Labour Commissioner and the IBA.
