Governor to release book on faith-based development bodies

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Feb. 24 A book on works of the faith-based development organisations in microfinance sector – Development, Divinity and Dharma, written by Prof Malcolm Harper – with a special reference to the Dakshina Kannada-based Shree Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) will be released by the Karnataka Governor, Mr Rameshwar Thakur, in Bangalore on March 1.

Ms Devaki Mutthukrishnan, Regional Director, Reserve bank of India, and Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman of SKDRDP, will be present on the occasion.

A press release by the Executive Director of SKDRDP, Dr L.H. Manjunath, said here that the book compares the working of the faith-based development institutions with those of the secular counterparts with a particular reference to microfinance and sustainability of the programmes. It also makes an in-depth study of SKDRDP, promoted by Dharmasthala Temple, its uniqueness, strength, weaknesses and future possibilities.

The study also throws light on several other faith-based development organisations in India and abroad and makes a comparative analysis.

Prof Harper, who earlier taught micro-enterprise as professor emeritus at Cranfield University, U.K., is a popular writer in the field.
