Hyderabad, Feb. 28 The Andhra Pradesh Government will speed up the formation of district disaster management authorities (DDMAs) in all districts, according to Dr J. Geetha Reddy, Minister for Major Industries.Andhra Pradesh is the first State in the country to form a State Disaster Management Authority, with a focus on prevention, Dr Reddy said in her inaugural address at National Conference on Industrial (Chemical) Disaster Management and Awareness on National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Guidelines here on Thursday.

The industry should develop linkages with the district authorities to be prepared for any eventuality, she said.

‘Be proactive’

Ms Preeti Sudan, Commissioner of Disaster Management, Andhra Pradesh, said the industry should be proactive in preparedness. “In fact, there had been no mock drills for a very long time. They should be conducted more frequently,” she said.

The industrial safety plans should be integrated with the strategies of DDMAs, which are being formed, she said. Mr J.R. Bhardwaj, Member, NDMA, said the guidelines released by the authority in April 2007 stresses on the importance of leveraging existing strengths of the industry in tackling disasters. The guidelines had incorporated latest international practices. “NDMA, in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), has been conducting awareness conferences on these guidelines in different States. We have also conducted eight major mock drills last year and target to do more this year,” he added.

Explaining some of the guidelines for chemical industries, Mr Bhardwaj said awareness would play a key role. “The use of a wet cloth and handkerchief would have prevented loss in the Bhopal tragedy which was not known to anybody,” he lamented.
