Bengal seeks information security course in IIITs

Kolkata, Feb. 29
The West Bengal Government is trying to persuade the Centre to include ‘information security’ as a subject in the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT).
Speaking at a seminar here on Friday organised by the Institute of Engineers, the State IT Minister, Mr Debesh Das, said, “Ensuring information security has become the biggest concern in every field now, be it for the corporate houses or the Government. We have suggested to the Centre to start a post graduate course in the IIITs.”
IT is growing at a fast pace in Bengal, and will require skilled manpower to grow from 65,000 to around 2 lakh by 2011. This will require the information security to be addressed with greater importance, he said.
“The Chief Minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has recently discussed the issue with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. We need a training institute in the State were professionals will be trained in different aspects of information security. Though there are 14 other subjects covered in the IIIT syllabi, information security has been left out.”
The minister also focussed on the provision of information security services. “If a firm needs manpower in departments like finance, audit, physical security, etc, they should also look for services on information security.”
Open source software technologies can also be used to decrease cost and become self-reliant in this regard, the Minister said.
Work on the centre for Open Source Development & Training, for which a budgetary allocation of Rs 2 crore has been made, will begin by March-end, he added.
