Plantation sector happy with allocations

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Feb. 29 The plantation sector has welcomed the announcements on rescheduling loans, loan waiver to small and marginal farmers and allocations made for replantation and rejuvenation of plantation crops.

The UPASI President, Mr D.P. Maheshwari, said waiver of loans to small and marginal farmers and the One Time Settlement option to loanees with more than 2 hectare holdings would help reduce the problems of the coffee planters to a large extent.

The association has hailed the allocations made for replantation and rejuvenation of tea, coffee, rubber and cardamom to the extent of Rs 40 crore, Rs 18 crore, Rs 19.41 crore and Rs 10.60 crore respectively.

Appeal

Mr Maheshwari has further appealed to the Government to avoid any restrictive provisions for growers with higher holdings.

The association welcomed the withdrawal of the Banking Cash Transaction Tax from April 1, 2009 and reduction in the Central Excise Duty from 3 per cent to 2 per cent.
