`Budget holds no hope for SSIs'

Visakhapatnam, March 2

The Union Budget has completely ignored the needs of the small-scale industry and agro-based industries and "it is really unfortunate that Mr Chidambaram has chosen to offer nothing to these sectors which provide employment to millions in the country," according to Mr B.V. Rama Rao, President of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Industries. In a press release issued here on Sunday, he said the pre-election Rs 60,000-crore debt relief scheme to farmers did not carry conviction or credibility, as there was no clear-cut provision in the budget for the waiver. "The banks and the financial system will be ruined by such steps and the farmers too will not be benefited in the long run," he said. He said the rural sector, especially the agro-based industries, should have been given greater consideration in the Budget. "For instance, the jute industry has been neglected," said Mr Rama Rao, also the Managing Director of the Swarnandhra Jute Mill in Srikakulam district. - Our Bureau
