Imports of pepper by the US during 2007 have shown a decline probably due to the high prices.

Total imports of pepper into the US in 2007 stood at 63,940 tonnes valued at $208.5 million comprising 50,957 tonnes of black, 5,564 tonnes of white and 7,419 tonnes of ground pepper, according to the International Pepper Community.

Compared to import of 70,539 tonnes in 2006, there was a decrease of nine per cent. Import of black pepper decreased by eight per cent and 29 per cent for white pepper, while import of ground pepper increased marginally by three per cent.

India, Indonesia, Brazil and Vietnam were the main sources of 97 per cent black pepper imported directly into the US. Import of white pepper originated mostly from Indonesia (72 per cent), while imports of ground pepper were mostly from India, Germany and Vietnam.

Rise in prices of black and white pepper is said to be the reason for the decline.
