Steel Marketing - Standards & Benchmarks States - Tamil Nadu Mandatory standards for steel products from May
Our Correspondent Madurai, March 3 Standards for 17 products in steel are to be made mandatory from May, according to Mr K. Anbarasu, Deputy Director General, Southern Regional Office, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai. The country’s growth process and achievements have much to do with the process of standardisation of products. It helps to face internally the global competition, and find markets outside for the products. So far, 18,000 Indian Standards have been formulated and 90 of them relate to mechanical transmission devices. Awareness about standardisation of products and the benefits that follow will help in the growth of industries in and around Madurai as it is becoming a rubber belt in the region, he said while inaugurating a seminar on ‘Standardisation activities of mechanical transmission devices’ organised by BIS in association with Fenner Conveyor Belting Pvt Ltd, Madurai, here on Monday. Formulating committeeMr Anbarasu said that the standards are not formulated by BIS but by committees consisting of members from the respective industries, and technical experts among others. These standards are amenable to changes as becomes necessary in the opinion of the committees. He urged the industries to participate in and give inputs for the fixation of standards, both national and international, to make the process easier. India has both participatory status and observer-member status in the fixation of international standards in products. In the former, the country has the right to vote and in the latter, the views at least get represented, he pointed out. Mr T.G. Mohanram, Senior Vice-President and Director, Fenner Conveyor Belting Pvt Ltd, Madurai, said that awareness about standardisation would help the small industries in exports in the face of global competition. With World Trade Organization in place, matching standards have become necessary among countries. ParticipantsMr P.C. Joshi, Head-Products And General Engineering Department, BIS, New Delhi; Dr P. Thavamani, Vice-President, Reasearch And Development, PIX Transmissions Ltd, Nagpur; Mr S. Bhattacharyya, Scientist-E (Production and General Engineering Department), BIS, New Delhi; Mr A.
