‘Time for farmers to achieve higher productivity’

Our Bureau

Thanjavur, March 3

With debt relief provided to the tune of Rs 60,000 crore in the Union Budget, it is now for the farmers to change their mindset and work towards achieving higher productivity, said Mr S.S. Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, here.

He told presspersons that farmer leaders who mobilise farmers for achieving their demands should now motivate them to use technology, hybrid seeds available and do progressive farming.

Currently, farmers are taking only 25 bags of paddy per acre. They should try to take 60 bags per acre, the minister said. Asked about the possibility of increasing the ceiling of two hectares to benefit more farmers, Mr Manickam said that there has to be framework and limitation while doing anything. Hence, the two-hectare limitation. But based on the experience, further concessions can be considered.
