RBI staff union calls for strike

Kolkata, March 3

The All India Reserve Bank Employees Association (AIRBEA) has given the call for one day's token strike on March 12 in support of various demands which include, among others, recruitment of assistants, curb on outsourcing of important central banking functions and opening of full-fledged RBI offices in all State capitals. AIRBEA, in a statement, points out that the strength of the assistants in RBI has dropped to 6,000 from 19,000 in 1995. Also, the outsourcing of such critical functions as inspection and supervision of commercial banks, urban cooperative banks and foreign exchange dealers is already having its effect on the economy. There is only one RBI office in Guwahati for the entire North-Eastern region. The offices opened recently in Dehra Dun, Raipur, Ranchi and Shimla are so small that they are ill-equipped to provide necessary services, it pointed out. - Our Bureau
