Pawar for more SAARC ties in farm sector

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 5 The Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, on Wednesday called for increasing co-operation in the agriculture sector, among the SAARC countries.

He also expressed the need to strengthen the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA).

“Intra-regional trade in South Asia is only 0.8 per cent of gross domestic product, a fraction against East Asia’s nearly 27 per cent of GDP, and the region does not correspond to the so-called natural trading partner hypothesis,” Mr Pawar said inaugurating a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation conference.

The agriculture scientist Dr M.S. Swaminathan, suggested that the SAARC countries should develop jointly a surveillance and early warning system for managing the trans-boundary pests.
