AICMI strike on March 10

Chennai, March 8

The All India Chamber of Match Industries (AICMI) has decided to go on a countrywide strike on March 10 as repeated pleas to the Union Minister to reduce the rate of excise duty to 4 per cent from 12 per cent became futile. A press release from AICMI said the reduction of the duty would go a long way in helping large-scale manufacturers to support their huge employee base. The current tax pattern encouraged small players, even though they did not opt for a 100 per cent han d-made process, to avoid tax worth about Rs 100 crore, the release said.
