Currently the country has about 33.6 crore people working in the 22 sectors studied by human resource firm Ma Foi Management Consultants. The study, titled ‘Employment Trends for 2008’, found that sectors such as mining, minerals, food products, furniture and textiles are predicting a negative growth in employment during the year. Ma Foi’s Employment Survey 2007 (METS ’07) showed that the highest average salary increase during the year was experienced by the energy generation and supply sector (16.8 per cent), followed by real estate and construction industry (16.1 per cent), IT (15.7 per cent), manufacturing of furniture (14.8 per cent) and hospitality (14.2 per cent). The city-wise analysis showed that though metros were seen to generate maximum employment numbers in 2007, in terms of percentage change in employment numbers in 2008 Hyderabad (29.7 per cent), Pune (28.1 per cent) and Bhubaneshwar (22.1) per cent were the forerunners.
