Advice to air-cargo sector

Our Bureau

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged the air cargo industry to try to improve customer service and competitiveness. This is because the industry is projected to grow at four per cent this year when the world trade grew by 7.5 per cent last year. This means other modes of transport, particularly by sea, are gaining in market share. The shipping sector, it might be noted, has not only introduced modern faster vessels but also succeeded in lowering costs through various innovative solutions. And the experiments for new solutions continue. At IATA’s second World Annual Air Cargo Symposium in Rome recently, its Director-General and CEO warned that with new capacity coming into the market — 200 to 300 wide-bodies due to enter the market each year till 2011 — the pressure on yields would only rise. The only way to survive and succeed in such a situation, according to him, will be to step up the quality of service and please customers.
