Direct Madurai-Jodhpur train sought

Our Correspondent

Madurai, March 9 The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has demanded the introduction of a new Madurai-Jodhpur train via Konkan Railway.

In a letter addressed to the Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, the chamber Secretary, Mr P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian said that the present train from Chennai to Jodhpur is run as a weekly and is always crowded.

He pointed out that around 10,000 families from Gujarat and Rajasthan who live in Madurai have no direct train to their home States. He further said that match factory owners from the region visit the cities in those States for business purposes. People from Tirunelveli live in these States in good volume. Salt, chemicals, textiles and spices go to these States from the region and Kerala.

A train in the route will connect the four port cities of Tuticorin, Kochi, Mangalore and Mumbai, he explained. He also demanded that the train be connected with at least five general compartments and a catering coach.
