Hopes to fetch Rs 700-cr sales in 2008-09

Chennai, March 10 TVS Motor Company on Monday launched the 125-cc motorcycle Flame, with an engine featuring a single spark plug. At a press conference here today, the company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Venu Srinivasan, said that the company expects Flame to fetch sales of Rs 700 crore in 2008-09.

Flame has recently been in news because rival motorcycle producer, Bajaj, won a patent suit against TVS, claiming the Flame’s two-spark plug engine infringed on its (Bajaj’s) patent. TVS, which claims it has not infringed any patent, has gone on appeal.

Because of the injunction issued by the Madras High Court against the use of the twin-spark plug engine, TVS Motor is now selling the motorcycle with a single spark plug engine. Mr Srinivasan said that the current engine has been so designed that there is no loss of advantage over the twin-spark plug engine.

March target

In March, TVS Motor expects to sell 15,000 units of Flame. Sales would rise month after month and reach 25,000 units a month by October, Mr Srinivasan said.

Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of the conference, officials of the company said that the current quarter may not be good, but said that next year would be a much better one, thanks mainly to the Flame.
