Rare liver transplant at Kamineni Hospitals

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, March 10 Doctors at Kamineni Hospitals have performed a rare liver transplant on a 46-year-old woman from Guntur. The procedure involved minimal transfusion of blood compared to the normal procedures.

Ms P. Ramadevi was diagnosed for a liver disease that required transplantation of the organ. “Though her husband came forward to donate a slice of his liver, it did not fulfil our specifications,” Dr Subba Rao Kanchustambam, who is part of the team of doctors that performed the surgery, told newspersons here.

Ms Ramadevi’s children were too small to donate the vital organ to their mother. The only way out was to get a liver from a deceased person. It took six months for her to get it from a brain-dead youth, whose kin had decided to donate his organs.

Procedure

On the procedure, Dr Rao said liver transplantations generally required large quantities of blood as the patients suffered from portal hyper tension (high blood pressure in the blood vessel that carries blood to the liver) and coagulation abnormalities.

“These factors result in huge requirement of blood. But early diagnosis and availability of a liver helped us use minimal amount of blood,” he said.

This would also help faster recovery of the patient.
