Q4 domestic air fares in India up 14%: Amex survey

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 11 The average domestic published airfares in India were up 14 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2007 as compared to the third quarter, according to an American Express Business Travel.

The average overall fares in the country, both domestic and international, went up by six per cent during the period.

“In India, in a quarter-on-quarter analysis, the published fares were up six per cent overall - up 14 per cent in domestic, up two per cent in intra Asia Pacific, flat to Europe, West Asia and Africa, and flat to the Americas.

Year-on-year analysis

In the year-on-year analysis, India published fares rose seven per cent overall - rose five per cent in domestic, nine per cent in intra Asia Pacific, flat to Europe, West Asia and Africa, and rose 24 per cent to the Americas,” it said.

Although fares have been rising across most routes, there has been some softening since the third quarter of 2007.

However, American Express Business Travel did not attribute this to any adjustment based on the economy at this time.

For Asia-Pacific region, airfares continued their upward trend with a one per cent increase in the fourth quarter of 2007.

However, this was slightly lower than the three per cent increase seen in the third quarter.

The airfare trends were reported by American Express Business Travel in the latest Asia Pacific Business Travel Monitor - the industry’s quarterly retrospective pricing benchmark to track airfare trends.
