Gangtok, March 11 Fed up with the frequent closure of the National Highway 31A, and its subsequent economic impact in the State, the State Government has introduced a resolution in the Assembly to ensure that this vital artery stays open all seven days in the week. The Central Government and the Government of West Bengal have been requested to evolve a permanent solution to this perennial problem at the earliest.

The resolution specifically seeks to ensure smooth flow of passenger/goods traffic to/from Sikkim along the National Highway 31A.

Justifying the move, Mr D.D. Bhutia, Minister, told the Assembly that Sikkim was surrounded on three sides by Nepal, China and Bhutan and was linked to the rest of the country through Darjeeling district of West Bengal by National Highway 31A.

“There is no rail link or airport. The only other road for movement of goods to Sikkim is via Lava which also passes through Darjeeling, West Bengal. NH 31 ‘A’ is not only the lifeline of Sikkim but is also the main supply route for the defence forces located on the International borders,” he said.
