Heavy rains lash Tamil Nadu coast

Thiruvananthapuram, March 12 The anticipated wet session let loose by an easterly wave kicked off to a brisk start, with coastal Tamil Nadu and isolated places in Kerala being swamped by heavy to very heavy showers during the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning.

Southern districts of Tamil Nadu bore the brunt of the barraging torrents, with Kattumannarkoil in Cuddalore recording 24 cm. Two other exceptionally heavy rainfall events were reported from Mayiladuthurai and Sirkali (both in Nagapattinam district) at 12 cm each.

A forecast issued by the Chennai Regional Met Centre said that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala, and at a few places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, south interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema. A warning issued by the centre spoke about the possibility of isolated heavy rain over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next two days.

A US National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) forecast estimated that up to 600 (six hundred) per cent above the weekly normal of rain could fall over Kerala and most of Tamil Nadu during March 12 to 19.

TROUGH PERSISTS

A helpful trough of low over southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts persisted. Another trough headed out from Lakshadweep area, reaching into the adjoining southeast Arabian Sea.

A third trough lay extended from Lakshadweep to south Konkan and Goa. A cyclonic circulation lay over the Commorin area and neighbourhood.
