Delivery of cargo hit at Chennai

Our Bureau

Chennai, March 12 The non-cooperation of the staff of Airport Authority of India has affected delivery of cargo at the Chennai air cargo terminal. However, there was no disturbance in the handling of passenger and cargo flights, said Mr Dinesh Kumar, Airport Director, Chennai.

The Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a press release said the Government has taken care for the passenger movement. However, for export/import of cargo the authorities have not given enough attention to ensure smooth operation. There was no staff to receive cargo from the flight; for data entry and to locate the parcels.

Our Bangalore Bureau reports: Ironically, it was air traffic as usual at the Bangalore airport, too, which is at the heart of the AAI staff strike to oppose its impending closure. Being a Defence Ministry-owned airport, air traffic here is handled by HAL’s traffic controllers and not AAI staff.

A senior officer who is part of the air traffic management team said the landings and take-offs were normal. The ground services are managed by the airlines.

The country’s third busiest airport, with annual passenger flow crossing 10 million, sees 315 scheduled flights each day.

The nearly 50-year-old HAL airport is to be closed down when the greenfield one at Devanahalli, built by the Siemens-Unique Zurich-L&T consortium, becomes operational in about a month. The closure of this and Hyderabad airports is the main reason for the country-wide strike.
