Strike not to hit operations shift in Hyderabad

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad, March 12 The ongoing strike by Airport Authority Employees Union (AAEU), even if it continues after March 15, is not likely to have an impact on the shift of operations to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport from the existing airport.

Though the new airport is run by a private player, it’s the employees of Airport Authority of India who take care of the key jobs of air traffic control and navigation systems.

As it is, some of the employees from the relevant departments have started making rounds to the new airport, taking part in the pre-launch trials to ensure smooth transition of flight operations.

‘No glitches’

“We don’t expect any glitch (as a result of the strike). As we received the final clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, we are all geared up for the launch beginning 0100 hours on Sunday,” a top GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd executive told Business Line.

“We have the required manpower team ready at the airport,” he said.

The ATC at Begumpet would continue to be live as the airport would be functional even after March 15.

services hit

Though responsible for delays in some cases, the strike, which began Tuesday night, has not resulted in any cancellations or rescheduling of air traffic.

“Flights are running late. Areas like ground handling, trolley help and emergency services like fire and electricity have been hit,” Mr V.S. Gupta, General Secretary (Hyderabad) of Airport Authority Employees’ Union, said.

Passengers at the airport on Wednesday found it difficult to find help to carry luggage.

Mr R.K. Singla, Director (AP) of AAI, said that there was no disruption in air traffic as the officials put in place a contingency plan.

An Air Deccan representative said the airline didn’t suffer any delays as a result of the strike.

Meanwhile, the Lok Satta Party has demanded that the present airport should be continued at least till good connectivity is ensured.

“Over-enthusiasm by the Government to open the new airport is resulting in hardships to the common people along with the airport staff. The present airport should be used for domestic services,” a party spokesperson said here in a statement.
