Chennai port records higher throughput

Our Bureau

Chennai, March 13 The Chennai port has surpassed the previous year’s total throughput of 53.41 million tonnes ahead of the closing of the current financial year. On March 11, the port crossed the figure and ended with a total handling of 53.45 million tonnes in the current fiscal.

The port is likely to exceed the Shipping Ministry’s target of 55.86 million tonnes for the current fiscal. By deepening the JD berths to 12 metre draft, the port has eliminated congestion and at present no vessel is waiting for want of berth, says a port trust press release.
