Oilseeds & Edible Oil Take advantage of firm prices, sunflower growers told G. Gurumurthy Coimbatore, March 17 Sunflower growers expecting their rabi crop (sown in October/November and being harvested in March) in Tamil Nadu have been advised to sell at once the seeds to take advantage of the firming oilseeds prices. The domestic and export market intelligence cell (DEMIC) of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, while confirming the uptrend in prices of sunflower seeds based on its market trend and price analysis for the oilseeds, said farmers could get a price in the Rs 28-31 range a kg of seed during the March-May 2008 season, depending upon the volume-weight basis. (The maximum price will be offered for high quality seeds which will weigh about 42 gm in a volume of 100 ml). The DEMIC team headed by Dr N. Raveendran, Project Co-ordinator, related the uptrend in sunflower seed prices to the adverse crop position (due to rains during flowering season) in two major sunflower growing States -Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, which together account for 65 per cent of the country’s sunflower production. Considering the cost of storage, the likely weight loss in storage and holding charges in the form of interest, the DEMIC team suggested the farmers to sell the seeds immediately without storing the produce. India produces 70 per cent of sunflower in rabi season (November to March). In Tamil Nadu, Tiruchi, Erode, Karur, Villupuram and Dindigul are the major sunflower growing areas.
