‘Low’ forms, to drift along southwest coast

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, March 20

The anticipated ‘low’ sprung up over the southeast Arabian Sea on Thursday featuring easterly winds winding into an elongated low-level circulation centre marked by widespread and largely unorganised convection.

These attributes, along with proximity to land and moderate vertical wind shear, will prevent the system from intensifying any further, according to an update by the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC).

WARMER SEAS

The warmer seas lapping up along the southwest coast, as depicted in the US Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (NCODA) plottings, would help the system loiter around, move north-northwest and get lugged coast-wards. From here, it is seen draining out moisture into the mainland.

Wind speeds associated with the system, with its core located to south of Nagercoil on Thursday morning, were estimated to be ranging from 10 to 15 knots. The JTWC assessed as ‘poor’ the potential for the development of a ‘significant tropical cyclone’ within the next 24 hours.

The Regional Met Centre, Chennai, said rainfall occurred at most places over Kerala and Lakshadweep and at many places over Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka during the 24 hours ended Thursday morning. Isolated rainfall occurred over interior Karnataka.

The stations recording maximum rainfall (in cm) were: Sivakasi-12; Rajapalayam and Watrap-11 each; Radhapuram (Tirunelveli)-10; Sivagiri-9; Srivilliputhur and Minicoy- 8 each; and Shenkottah and Ketti (Nilgiris)-7 each. Forecast for the next two days said that rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Lakshadweep, coastal and south interior Karnataka and at a few places over north interior Karnataka. Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely to occur over Rayalaseema and south coastal Andhra Pradesh.

HEAVY FALLS

A warning issued for the period said that isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal and south interior Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said that the intensity would scale down subsequently.
