Kolkata, March 20 The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is installing an instrument landing system (ILS) at the second runway of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport here. The new facility will be operational by June this year and will entail an initial investment of Rs 4 crore.

Mr P.K. Singhal, Regional Executive Director of the airport, told Business Line that the facility will now permit night landings at the second runway.

The second runway till now has been receiving only daytime flights, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, when the primary runway would remain closed for maintenance work or in case of a fault.

At present, in case of a fault at the primary runway during night time, the secondary runway cannot be used, he pointed out.

The primary runway is already equipped with two ILS facilities at its two ends. The Kolkata airport handles around 200 flights daily with the volumes growing by nearly 6 per cent year-on-year.

“We will now implement the Category-1 ILS to meet the requirements at the secondary runway.

All necessary arrangements have been completed to implement this facility within the next three months,” Mr Singhal added.

The primary runway at the Kolkata airport has a more advanced Category-2 ILS, while the one at Delhi airport has upgraded itself to Category-3.

The ILS comprises the localiser and glide-path. While the former provides information on deviation from the runway, the latter gives out data on vertical deviation of the aircraft from the glide angle.
