Assistance hiked for housing under Indira Awaas Yojana

The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for hiking the unit assistance provided to the rural below poverty line (BPL) households for construction of a dwelling unit under the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY).

Briefing newspersons on the decision, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Priyaranjan Dasmunshi, said that unit assistance for an IAY house in plain areas would now be increased to Rs 35,000 from Rs 25,000.

For hilly/difficult areas, the assistance would go up from Rs 27,500 to Rs 38,500. For upgradation, the assistance will go up to Rs 15,000 from Rs 12,500 across the country. The Cabinet decided to make the revised rates of unit assistance applicable on new IAY houses sanctioned after April 1, 2008.

The Cabinet also advised public sector banks to include IAY houses under the differential rate of interest (DRI) scheme for lending up to Rs 20,000 per unit at an interest rate of 4 per cent. It was also decided to make a provision for additional outlay of Rs 350 crore for rural housing during 2008-09 to maintain physical targets at least at the level of the current year 2007-08.
