GSPC KG well: Essar Wildcat ready for drilling

Co is anchoring and setting up the rig for operations

Kolkata. March 20 Essar Oilfield Services owned Essar Wildcat is finally ready to carry forward the drilling campaign of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) in the Krishna-Godavari basin block. The semi-submersible rig was expected to be ready for drilling in June 2007.

According to a recent statement by GeoGlobal Resources Inc, “Essar Wildcat is on location and is preparing to drill the KG-19 well.” GeoGlobal holds participatory stake in the block. GSPC holds operating interest.

“GSPC has confirmed that the Essar Wildcat rig is anchoring and setting up the rig in order to commence drilling the KG-19 exploratory well. Spudding of the well is anticipated once all eight anchors have been set,” GeoGlobal said.

The surface location of the well is approximately 11 kilometres northeast from the KG-8 platform – where GSPC had already struck gas – and is located in deeper waters of approximately 150 meters in depth.

Essar acquired the offshore rig from the world’s largest operator Transocean in early 2007. The rig can negotiate water depths of 400 metres and drill up to 7,500 metres.

According to sources, Essar Wildcat will play an important role in exploring hydrocarbon resources in the comparatively deeper (average water depth of over 100 metres) and presumably more prolific Eastern part of the KG-OSN-2001/3 offshore block.

GSPC had already pressed three more rigs Perro Negro 3, Atwood Beacon and Deep Driller into service in the block. The joining of Essar Wild Cat was particularly important for the operator as Perro Negro 3 was recently anchored for maintenance and inspection.

Meanwhile, GSPC is still waiting for the declaration of commerciality of its KG-8 find which is a pre-requisite for submission of the field development plan. The company previously claimed to have tested success in the appraisal drilling for KG-8 find.
