AAI, Indian staff flash strike begins at Hyderabad

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, March 21 Even as the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport gets the Ministry of Civil Aviation nod to begin commercial operations from Sunday, hundreds of employees of Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Indian have begun flash strike, protesting against the closure of the existing Begumpet airport.

Though the flash strike has begun in Hyderabad this afternoon, it is likely to spread nationwide.

“Indian has been ground handling for over 50 years. The Government is now favouring GMR and gave a virtual monopoly on all airport activities at the new airport,” Mr Sudhakar, Regional Secretary of Indian Airlines Union, told Business Line.

He claimed that all the 1,000 employees in the union are on strike. The strike is expected to hit flight schedules. An Indian official, however, said that the strike would have an impact only on ground-handling and that the flight schedule would not be hit.

Meanwhile, AAI employees have put up banners in the passenger terminal buildings, conveying to the passengers the salient features and strengths of the Begumpet airport.
