Plantation industry laments unequal tax rates

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, March 21 The plantation industry has expressed disappointment over the Tamil Nadu Government’s failure to accede to its demand for equal treatment in tax rates.

Reacting to the budget proposals presented on Thursday, the Planters’ Association of Tamil Nadu said that it had requested the Government to rectify the discriminatory rate of 4 per cent VAT levied on teas sold by the corporate sector at the Coonoor and Coimbatore auction centres.

The association had sought the lowering of this rate to one per cent, as levied for teas sold by the Bought leaf Factories and Cooperative Tea Factories.

The association had also pleaded for reduction in the tax rate of branded coffee powder from 12.5 per cent to 4 per cent VAT, as in the neighbouring states.
