Lack of focus on Coimbatore, textile sector, says CII

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, March 21

The Chairman of the CII Coimbatore zone, Mr C.N. Ashok, has expressed disappointment over the lack of focus on Coimbatore and the textile sector in particular in the State budget for 2008-09.

‘The textile sector is fighting to survive due to appreciating rupee, rise in the price of raw materials and power shortage. This issue has been ignored/overlooked,’ Mr Ashok said.

He also felt that the Government should have considered the setting up of State Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, a key recommendation by the industry body, to enhance manufacturing competitiveness, and single window for environment clearance for new industries.

That apart, the CII has lauded the announcements with regard to setting up of SEZs in backward districts, development of tier II towns, increased allocation for agriculture, health and education.

It has also urged the State Government to commission the new power projects to manage the current energy shortage and meet future demands.
