Swarovski in expansion mode, acquires more land

Alka Kshirsagar

Pune, March 22 Crystallised elements manufacturer Swarovski India Pvt Ltd (SIPL) is in expansion mode and has acquired around 20 acres of additional land at Ranjangaon near Pune, where it already has a unit manufacturing pearls exclusively for the export market since 2001. Sources said that another manufacturing facility was in the offing. The Austrian company, however, declined to reveal either its plans or the investments in any new project. In response to an e-mail, SIPL’s spokesperson in Delhi said, “Swarovski is a 100 per cent privately-owned company and hence, we do not, as a global policy, disclose any investment-related plans on a public domain.”

SIPL’s existing unit at Ranjangoan industrial area is located on 2.5 acres. The Indian operations of SIPL comprise two distinct businesses. One is the production unit that comes under its Crystallized Swarovski Elements division. The second is the retail business, which comes under the Consumer Goods Business division.

The crystal beads used in these pearls are made exclusively in Austria and imported for the application of the enamel coating, for which the material used is a closely-guarded trade secret.

The end-product is pearls in 23 different colours (of a total of 70), which are then exported to the parent plant for applications in the jewellery industry.

According to a person associated with the industry, the enamel-coated pearls — which have natural sheen and are scratch resistant in addition to having the same weight and lustre as natural pearls — are being increasingly used in the domestic market on account of these qualities and their cost-effectiveness.
