Nepal importers’ woes

The importers in Nepal are having difficult times. For various reasons. First, political. In February, there were bandhs for 16 consecutive days in Nepal with the result they could not bring their consignments into the country. The importers had no other option but to use Kolkata Dock system of Kolkata port for routing their consignments. But, for various operational reasons, the imported containers would lie within the port for more than the permitted time period, and importers are required to pay the shipping lines $21 per container per day. This is proving too much for them. Instead of paying detention charges, they are even prepared to have their boxes unloaded at Haldia for onward movement to Birganj (Nepal) by rail. The Container Corporation of India (Concor), which runs container trains services from Kolkata port to Birganj, would not agree to it unless there is adequate volume. What is needed is perhaps a little more coordination between the port authorities and Concor. Sadly, that is lacking.
