BlackBerry: DoT may extend deadline on data monitoring

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 24 The Department of Telecom may extend the deadline for operators to ensure proper monitoring of data sent through BlackBerry devices by another 15 days.

The move comes even as the Government and the service providers are discussing ways to address the concerns raised by the security agencies. DoT had earlier set March 31 as the deadline for the operators to comply with the security norms. DoT had said that either the encryption code should be brought down to less than 40 bits or else Research In Motion, the Canada-based company which offers BlackBerry services, should submit a decryption key to the Government.

Security agencies had said that it could not monitor the data being sent through BlackBerry devices as it used higher encryption codes. RIM has so far refused to give the decryption codes. DoT has told the mobile operators including Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance Communication to convince RIM to ensure that proper monitoring was being done.

Spiral effect

Industry observers fear that if DoT goes ahead and stops BlackBerry from offering services in the country, it could have a spiral effect on other high encrypted services like e-commerce and online banking services. DoT has already moved an internal note to enforce the 40 bit encryption code rule.

It has also laid down the procedure for submitting the decryption keys to Government agencies. But Internet Service Providers have urged DoT to review the archaic laws and permit higher encryption codes to be used.
