Rush for midnight ‘biryani, appams’

The young growing work force has brought about changes not just in lifestyle goods and services but also in the way food is offered, served especially in odd times in the night.

Now, you have popular offerings midnight ‘biryani bash’ and even ‘appams’, the latter to cater to the vegetarians. What started with star hotels is now spreading to other restaurants.

“Young people like to party and spend for food and no better way to cater to them and offer food at a time that meets their tastes and requirements,” Ms Nooryan at Mariott said.

Most major hotels have added late night food to their menu mainly to cater to youth who finish work late in the night or party late and then come to catch up with their favourite food item, she said.

Week-end rush

Mr M.V. Naidu, a chef at one of the leading star hotels, said that Fridays and Saturdays are full house and most restaurants are packed. Often, it is booked in advance but we do have many walk-ins. However, on Sundays, it is difficult to get space unless they book in advance.

Most hotels offer the entire range of buffet which includes biryani, appams, idlis and dosas too.

The ‘midnight biryani’ culture is nothing new to Hyderabad. It has been there for ages at most popular biryani joints. However, while the shutters were downed, these restaurants provided a backdoor entry to customers to beat the police regulations that mandated closure of hotels by 11 pm.

Irani joints

However, at a time when everything is branded, ‘midnight biryani’ is the growing offering. Popular restaurants such as Ohrie’s, Greenpark and Takatak are flooded with visitors late in the night.

In the 80s and 90s most of the popular Irani joints, were hubs for cozy meetings on a hot cup of Irani chai biscuits, with juke box, the backdrop playing music for 10 paise. These Irani hotels also served biryani.

The Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration, Dr C.V.S. Sarma, too recently spoke about how young and old alike feel the need for lung space and are taking to new ways such as midnight biryani and dosas and appams late in the night.

The entertainment zones have now shifted from Irani hotels to pubs and malls with most of them partying late and then lining up for food of their choice. What can be better than midnight biryani in the Nizami city, where everything changes except this most powerful global brand biryani.
